We get this question every week — usually after a cold morning shower. The honest answer isn't 'always replace' or 'always repair'. It's a quick decision tree.
Repair makes sense when…
- The tank is under 8 years old
- It's a single failed component (element, thermostat, TPR valve)
- The body is dry and rust-free
- Repair is straightforward (one component, parts available)
Replace makes sense when…
- Water is weeping from the body or seams (the tank is gone)
- It's over 10 years old — manufacturer warranty has expired anyway
- Hot water is rusty or discoloured
- You're paying for repeat repairs on the same unit
Heat pump worth a look?
For most Illawarra homes, swapping an old electric tank for a heat pump pays for itself within a few years on power bills, and the NSW Energy Savings Scheme rebate usually covers a big chunk of the install. We'll do the paperwork.
