Burst pipes are the most damaging plumbing fault — a 15mm copper line that lets go in a wall cavity at 2am can spill 1,500 litres before anyone notices. Older Shellharbour, Wollongong and Albion Park homes often still have original soft-temper copper that's been slowly pitted by aggressive Illawarra water; newer estates in Shell Cove and Calderwood are increasingly PEX where the failure is usually at a poorly crimped joint or where a builder accidentally drove a nail through a stud.
