What Is A NSW Gas Compliance Certificate (And Why You Need One)

If a 'gas fitter' installs your cooktop without one, your insurance is void and the install is illegal. Here's the plain-English version.

Every new gas appliance install or alteration in NSW legally requires a Gas Compliance Certificate from a licensed gas fitter. It's lodged with NSW Fair Trading and is your proof the work was done to AS/NZS 5601.

Why it matters

  • Your home insurance can be voided without one
  • Conveyancers ask for it on resale
  • It's the only proof the install was leak-tested and certified
  • Strata and builders' warranty require it

What to check

Ask your gas fitter for their NSW licence number before they start, and ask them to email the Certificate when the job is done. If they hesitate on either, walk away.
